3 Great Ways to Get Hired During the Holidays

It’s that time of the year again.  While the holidays are great, they are brutal for job seekers.  It seems no one is hiring for professional positions during the holiday season and most job seekers fear if they haven’t secured a position by now, they’ll have to wait until January.

The job boards may be getting thinner, but that’s no reason to despair.  There are ways to get hired, even as the holidays approach.

  1. Temporary Agency

The great thing about a temporary agency is they have a pool of employers who are actively seeking people to join their team.  Temp agencies are becoming incredibly popular for companies large and small, especially for special projects.  A lot of companies use the holidays to run special programs or projects.  Although they don’t have the time to do the recruiting themselves, they are definitely in need of a workforce to wrap up beta testing or other projects they intend to have ready to roll out the first of the year.  This is crunch time and temporary agencies offer a quick resolution to their staffing needs.  Getting in with a reputable staffing agency is a great way to get your foot in the door and find a position pretty quickly. To get hired during the holidays you have to spread you name and experience to as many people as possible.

  1. Direct E-Mails

Another way to get creative with your job search is to take matters into your own hands.  Make a list of smaller companies in your area you’d be interested to work for.  Then, compose an e-mail introducing yourself and ask if they have any need of additional support as they wrap up the year.  Include your resume and your skillset.  For instance, you introduce yourself and ask if they currently have any “accounting needs” you might be able to help with. Express your interest in joining their team.  The email should read like a generic cover letter.  You want to be specific in your skills, but vague in the position you are looking for as you don’t know what they may be needing.  This works because small businesses ALWAYS need more bodies, but seldom have the time or budget for full on recruiting campaigns.  If a great candidate falls into their lap, chances are they will jump at the chance to get you in the door.  They may have been planning a campaign for the beginning of the year, but if they like what you send, they could be swayed to move up their time table for the added benefits of not having to go through the drudgery of a recruiting campaign.

  1. Networking Events

Networking events are a great way to meet people who have insider information on the companies you want to get in with.  They may not have an official posting out yet, but with the end of the fiscal year, plans are already being made for positions and growth for the following year.  Building rapport with the right people will absolutely get you short listed when the time comes to hire.  In fact, there are many instances where they’ll bring a great candidate on board before the new year, just so they don’t lose you to another company.  Don’t underestimate the power your likability factor plays in getting you hired.  No matter the industry, if you can make a hiring decision easier for a company, they are happy to make the timetable sacrifice for the added convenience.

To get hired during the holidays we strongly suggest you get started now and best the rush of other candidates as well!
