Use the Holidays to Land a Job
Landing a holiday job during the holidays may seem near impossible, but it may actually be easier than you might think. While most candidates are taking a hiatus from the grind of job seeking, you could use the holidays to land a great job.
Here are a few insider tips to help you with your holiday job search.
- Search Job Boards
While it may be true that onboarding a new hire during the holidays isn’t ideal, that doesn’t mean hiring someone during the holidays is not optimal. October is typically when budgets, along with position additions are approved for the next calendar year. Although these jobs don’t open up until January one, many hiring managers like to get a jump start. They will use the holidays to hire for the position, so they can begin onboarding right away, come January.
- Take Seasonal Work
Most candidates in the job market would prefer a permanent full-time position, however, be open to temporary or seasonal work. It’s a great way to get your foot in the door and build some important connections and a stellar reputation within a company or organization you’d like to work for permanently. This is one of the best ways to get short listed for an opening down the road. Who knows, once they see your value, they may even open up a position for you they had not previously considered, just to keep you.
- Work the Networking Scene
Most professional groups and networking memberships have at least one holiday mixer on the books to close out the year. This could be a great opportunity to get in front of the right people. There will undoubtedly be hiring managers or department leads who are running against the clock to get a position filled and are not eager to spend their holidays reading over a stack of resumes. Meeting a great candidate in person could save them a lot of time and effort.
- Stay Current on Social Media
During the holidays, many busy executives and hiring managers will be taking more time off and spending that time viewing and posting on social media. Follow key players on Linked In and other social platforms. Use this opportunity to reach out and comment of some of their posting or maybe even extend a holiday greeting via direct message.
Volunteering is a great way to gain access to executives and decision makers who usually attend big functions for the non-profits they sponsor. Not only is this a great way to connect, it’s also a great addition to your resume. If a hiring manager sees you volunteer with an organization they are already affiliated with, it speaks highly in your favor.
- Have an elevator pitch ready
Professional mixers are not the only way to connect with people who may be able to recommend you for a position. You’d be surprised at the connections your very own family and friends may have. Be prepared with a quick “elevator pitch” explaining your expertise and the position you are seeking in case you meet someone with influence and the conversation turns professional.
- Be available
One of the biggest mistakes job seekers make is going off the grid for the holidays assuming if they haven’t heard from a recruiter yet, they probably aren’t interested. For some hiring managers who fall behind on their recruiting, a slow holiday presents the perfect opportunity to catch up. The last thing you want to do is not have access to your e-mail and fall behind on your voicemails. If you are traveling for the holidays, make sure you are still accessible.
